Asia Pacific Telecom Operators Rate Emerson Network Power Most Reliable According to Leading Analyst IDC
March 07, 2010

Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity, has been recognised by Asia Pacific telecom operators as the most reliable infrastructure solutions provider according to leading analyst firm IDC.

In its report titled ‘Power Rectifier Reliability: Telco Carriers’ Perspective in Asia/Pacific’, IDC conducted in-depth interviews with 16 leading telecommunications operators from seven countries – Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong – to gain insight into infrastructure reliability best practice, and to measure the relative importance of reliability, efficiency and cost.

The study found that, in the highly-competitive telco market, operators differentiate and compete on their ability to deliver high quality of service to their customers. This brings the issue of infrastructure – and specifically, in this study, power rectifiers – into sharp focus, as the reliability of these crucial infrastructure components directly impacts on the operators’ ability to deliver on their service guarantees.

The study found that reliability (24 percent) and efficiency (23 percent) were the top considerations for power rectifier purchases by all respondents, followed by cost (15 percent) and support (14 percent). Emerson Network Power rectifiers were deployed by the majority of respondents (12), followed by Delta Electronics (8) and Eltek Valere (7). In each case, Emerson Network Power rated the highest overall for reliability and efficiency compared to other brands.

“Telecom operators are under pressure to lower costs while maintaining the high availability of their systems, and in discussions with our customers in Asia, system-level reliability is a major point of differentiation for us in the market,” says Ling Chee Hoe, general manager for Emerson Network Power’s Energy Systems business in Asia .

“Importantly, the findings of the IDC report validate our approach to help customers strike a balance between reliability, efficiency and cost, and even though we have the largest install base in Asia , independent validation of our solutions against our biggest competitors will be reassuring to customers already invested with us.”

“We regularly discuss the component-level benefits of our solutions through operator outreach programs,” adds Chee Hoe, “but the real interest is in system-based topics, where we can clearly demonstrate our ability to help our customers to increase reliability, improve energy efficiency and reduce OPEX.”

Power rectifiers are the basic building blocks of DC power systems used by the majority of the world’s telecom operators. The bigger the telco, the larger the number of DC power systems (and power rectifiers) they deploy in their network. The IDC study reported this number varied between those companies that owned more than 25,000 rectifiers, and about two-fifths of companies that owned less than 10,000.
